Using FrontPage
Getting your site FrontPage ready...
To get the FrontPage server extensions installed to your account, just request them from our Webmaster by sending an email to webmaster@linkline.com. The request will usually take several business hours to complete.

FrontPage Extensions are only available for Web Hosting accounts. Personal Web sites will need to use an FTP clientto upload files.

Creating your FrontPage 98/2000 Website:

  1. After you have installed FrontPage to your workstation, open the program from your Start, Programs menu in Windows.
  2. After the application opens, you'll be presented with a blank page. You can start entering text or go up to the toolbar to change the text colors, etc. just like in any other MS Office 97/98/2000 application.
  3. Once you have tried a few different things out, right-click anywhere in the new page you've been working in. Choose Page Properties...
  4. Here you can change the page title, that appears on the web browser's toolbar when you view your web pages, the background color, link colors, etc.
  5. If you want to use a "theme" that was included with the application, close out of the Properties window and select "Theme..." from the Format drop down menu. Select the theme you like best, or not one at all, and click okay.
  6. Go to the File drop down menu when done with the page, and choose Save As... Save your file according to the format discussed in the ”Rules for Filenames” section below if you are not already sure how to name files for the Web. You will want to save your files to the default directory that appears under Save As... unless you have used FrontPage before and understand how subwebs and webs work on your PC.
  7. When ready to start a new page, go to the File drop down menu, and select New > Page. If you implemented a theme in the earlier step, you'll notice the theme appears automatically in the new page. If you did not, you will need to manually configure the way the page looks.
  8. You can link the pages together by going to the Navigation view (clickable on the left-hand side of the FrontPage window) and clicking on the files and dragging and dropping them together.
  9. Once you've created several pages, and are ready to practice publishing, read the next section.
  10. Remember: Practice makes perfect. Once you start to play around with the program a lot, you'll learn about the many new and cool things that you can add to your site, like message boards, forms, images, links, etc.
  11. You can always buy an additional book on getting started with FrontPage if the manual does not contain enough detail.

Publishing your FrontPage 98/2000 Website:
Once you are done building your pages or making changes to existing ones, you are ready to publish. The steps below are the same steps you will take every time you need to publish your web or make changes to it.

  1. Connect to the Internet. (Do this before opening FrontPage. If FrontPage is already open close it down, connect, and then reopen it).
  2. If you don't already have FrontPage open, open it, and go to File, Open to open the web site that you would like to publish. (The web should be already saved to your PC).
  3. Once the web is open, go to File, Publish Web...
  4. Enter in either your site's web address or the servers IP address (192.216.128.3) that was setup when you signed up the account. If you know that your domain is already active (it's propagated) then you will likely want to enter http://www.[insertyourdomain.com] into the field. FrontPage at times is very picky and will require the complete URL of the site (ie. http://www.insertyourdomain.com/).
  5. Then click Publish.
  6. As long as your FrontPage application locates your web address on the Internet and verifies that the FrontPage server extensions are installed (see the "Getting your site FrontPage ready" section on this page), you will then be prompted for the username and password for your account.
  7. Enter in both the username and password exactly as they were sent to you. Our web servers are case sensitive.
  8. After you have done this, you will see the pages start to publish to the site.
  9. When the publishing is done, you will be presented with a link to view your web site. Click on the link and it will take you to the site.
  10. If you want to make any changes, just go back into FrontPage, make the changes and publish again as outlined above.

Connecting Live to Your Site:
This is only for advanced users of MS FrontPage. (And if you do make changes while connected live, make sure to back them up to your PC as outlined in the "Backing up your FrontPage 2000 web site" section below).

  1. Connect to the Internet. (Do this before opening FrontPage. If FrontPage is already open close it down, connect, and then reopen it).
  2. If you don't already have FrontPage open, open it.
  3. On your toolbar in FrontPage you will see a little yellow file folder with an arrow pointing down to its right. Click on the arrow and choose Open Web...
  4. If you've published to your web before, you will see it in the window that pops up. Double-click it to enter. If you have not published to the web before, then enter in the complete URL in the location field (i.e., http://www.[insertyourdomain.com]). Click Open after doing so.
  5. If you've published to your web before, your login information might already be saved in the application. Click okay to accept the information. If you have not published to the web before, then enter in both the username and password exactly as they were sent to you. Our web servers are case sensitive.
  6. Once FrontPage is logged into the web, the web's directories and/or subwebs will appear. Click on the Open button to enter the main directory of the web.
  7. Now you are viewing all the content in your web directly on the web server. Any changes you make to files are immediate upon clicking Save. When done, make sure to back up these changed files to your PC by reading the next section "Backing up your FrontPage 2000 web site."

Backing up Your FrontPage 2000 Website:

  1. Follow steps 1 through 6 in the "Connecting live to your site" section above.
  2. Go to File, Publish Web...
  3. Click the Browse button.
  4. Click the Personal view (clickable on the left-hand side of the FrontPage window)
  5. Double-click on the web that you'd like to publish to. (You might only have one. If so, double click on it).
  6. Click Open.
  7. Click Options. From there decide what parts of your web you'd like to back up to your PC.
  8. Then click Publish.
  9. When your files are done downloading to your workstation, FrontPage will inform you.
Note: If you prefer to back up your web to a disk drive or somewhere else on your PC, just browse to the proper location after step 3.

Troubleshooting:

The advantage of using FrontPage for creating and publishing your site is the ease with which such tasks can be done. However, as with any program, there are commonly made mistakes to watch out for. Here are some simple tips that can help you prevent the most common snags when using Microsoft FrontPage.

  • Make sure that you have an Internet connection when you attempt to publish your site. If you do not have an Internet connection established, FrontPage will invoke the Microsoft Publishing Wizard or possibly report other errors. If this happens, cancel the publishing procedure, establish an Internet connection, and try again.
  • Do not attempt to use the Microsoft Publishing Wizard to publish your site. It is surprisingly difficult to use, and can potentially cause problems with your FrontPage web. Instead, publish through the FrontPage Explorer which is easier to use in comparison.
  • Do not use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to publish your site. FrontPage expects that webs will be published through the FrontPage Explorer. If you use FTP, components of your web (webbots in particular) may not function properly.
  • When publishing your pages, list your domain in lower-case letters such as: www.yourdomainname.com   Normally domain names are not case-sensitive, but using upper-case letters when publishing may not work properly.
  • If you have installed AOL (American OnLine) software after installing FrontPage, FrontPage may not function properly, automatically invoking the Microsoft Publishing Wizard when you attempt to publish, or possibly reporting other errors. If you experience this, you will need to reinstall the FrontPage Personal Web Server.
  • If your web browser uses proxy settings in order to get out on the web then you will need to enter those setting in Frontpage configuration as well. To do so, go to Tools=>Options=>Proxies and enter the http proxy in the following format: proxyatyourISP.com:port_Number
