Troubleshooting Dial-Up

Having trouble with your dial-up connection? Slow speeds? Disconnects? Here is some information that may help you solve your dial-up problems.

Most common ways to fix dial-up problems:

  • Restart Computer.
  • Check Dial-Up Settings.
  • Try Another Access Number.
  • Use an initialization string.
  • Re-install modem or Upgrade modem drivers.

Checking Dial-up Settings for Windows 95/98

  1. Double Click 'My Computer'.
  2. Double Click 'Dial-up Networking'.
  3. Right Click on the connection you are using, usually named 'Linkline'.
  4. Click on 'Properties'.
  5. Verify that the phone number is correct.
  6. Click on the 'Server Types' tab.
  7. Make sure it looks like the one below, then click OK.


Checking Dial-up Settings for Windows ME

  1. Double Click 'My Computer'.
  2. Double Click 'Control Panel'.
  3. Double Click 'Dial-up Networking'
  4. Right Click on the connection you are using, usually named 'Linkline'.
  5. Click on 'Properties'.
  6. Verify that the phone number is correct.
  7. Click on the 'Server Types' tab.
  8. Make sure it looks like the one above, then click OK.

Using an Initialization String for Windows 95/98/ME

  1. Double Click 'My Computer'.
  2. Double Click 'Control Panel'.
  3. Windows ME users: Click on 'View all Control Panel Options'.
  4. Double Click on 'Modem'.
  5. Click on 'Properties'.
  6. Click on the 'Connection' tab.
  7. Click on 'Advanced'.
  8. Then insert the initialization string in the field labeled 'Extra Settings'.

Re-Install or Upgrade Modem Drivers

We do not support the re-installing or upgrading of your modem drivers, although this is the item that will fix most connection problems. You may want to contact the manufacturer of your modem, or visit their website for instructions on how to do this. You may find a list of modems here. This may help you find you modem manufacturers website or new drivers for the modem.
