File Transfer Protocol is the simplest way to transfer files
between computers across the Internet. FTP is an
application protocol that uses the Internet's TCP/IP
protocols, just like HTTP or SMTP. Today, there are
hundreds of FTP applications, including the browser you
use everyday (through which you have probably already
FTPed files and didn't even know it)!
FTP Settings
The following settings apply to most stand alone FTP
clients such as WSFTP, Cute FTP, Fetch FTP, etc. Do not
confuse these settings with those required for browser
based HTTP publishing. There are several tutorials for
specific FTP clients which can be found in the here.
Please review them before requesting assistance.
Insert the following settings in your FTP client:
Host Name/Address: ftp.yourdomainname.com
For Personal Pages, use ftp.linkline.com
User ID: The member name you chose at sign up
Password: The password sent to you at sign up
Do NOT enter any other information beyond this.
There is no need to enter a directory name or full path;
the above settings will automatically place you in your
base directory.
Get an FTP Application
Download.com has over 100 different versions that you can download
and try for free. We recommend WS_FTP LE 95 or CuteFTP
if you are running the Windows OS on your workstation,
or Fetch if you have a Mac. These are the most common
FTP applications, and therefore have the most
documentation.
